Frequently Asked Questions
How can we help you?
Hey newbie!
I remember going to a session for the first time. Not knowing what was going to happen, what the people would be like. Was I going to be able to do it, or anything?
What happened if I couldn’t keep up? Was the teacher was going to tell me off? Was I wearing the right gear – how will I know what to do???
RELAX – we have got your back. It is my personal promise that we will look after you. You will be seen. You will be cared for.
We have all been in for those scary first steps- thats why we strongly encourage your first No Sweat Intro- so you can pop in and see what its all about by yourself!
Here are a few useful steps that might help comfort and support you.
Shortly after you join, one of our team will be in touch to see how you are going and provide any support you need.
We Love it when you ask questions! (Because we cater for novices and people with a few curveballs we are used to people feeling a bit nervous and having lots of questions & concerns- its ok!!)
These are our most common questions,if you have any others please contact us or hit the book a chat button.
I have no idea where to start! Or if I'm even ready to!?
Thats ok- let’s get started together with your No Sweat Intro which is really just that.
No sweating.
Just a 30-45min chat where we find out where you are at now and where you want to go. Then together we can decide what your best plan going forwards will look like.
Will I fit in?
Let’s be completely honest here. If you are a next level athlete and love matching your crop top and hot pants to your mat and getting into superb selfie poses – then no- you probably won’t.
Our students tend to be on the older side (with our fab young ones that like the fact that they don’t have to look cool in our classes). Most of us are on the plus side of average & if you have seen any of our socials (just click the links at the top of this page if you want to check us out)- we are not perfect in any way shape or form.
If you like improving yourself, without showing off.
If you like being around a group of supportive & kind people (and not feeling the need to have to ‘fit in’).
If you want a place where you can just chill out on your mat or have a chat with the person beside you.
If you want to feel seen in a class & not have to do the same thing as the person beside you.
If you are happy for things to be adjusted along the way with a sense of education and development rather than a deep yogic experience.
Then yeah – you will fit in fab
What is even the diffference between Yoga & Pilates?
Well let us describe it this way… They are kind of like Veges & fruit. Kind of the same. Kind of different.
Lots of people get confused between which are which sometimes (think tomatoes).
There is a lot of strong feeling which is better- but at the end of the day both are great for you.
You’ll find out along the way which you prefer.
Just like fruit & vege a lot of what you get out of it and or enjoy is down to the way the chef serves it up (how the class runs with a particular teacher).
Within both Yoga & Pilates there are lots of different ways to do things (just like there are lots of different types of fruit & vege) the key for us is working with you to find out how you like it and serving it up – with a bit of variety for interest & health along the way!
Both Yoga & Pilates focus on strength, stretch, breathing, awareness of body, mind & breathe & creating connection, control & confidence within the body. Both are very much centered around balance & posture.
Should I do Yoga or Pilates?
It really is up to you.
Because our classes are very much catered to YOU. Whatever your goals or rehab needs are, they will be catered to whether you are in a Pilates or a Yoga session.
Lets be honest- a lot of when you will attend sessions is more dependent on your time availability, rather than whether the class is named Yoga or Pilates. Within a one on one session- its not a worry at all as everything is curated to you. Within a group session, rest assured that the session is adapted to the individuals in the group.
Our teachers are influenced by both styles of movement and are experienced in multiple schools of movement principles – this means they have a massive tool box to reach into to make sure things work for you!
I have been recommended to try XYZ exercise- is this right for me?
Can we please have a chat?
It always pays to get a very clear idea of where the recommendations came from & why before we can answer that for you.
In a couple of quick sentences hopefully this may help quickly:
Yes Yoga & Pilates are weightbearing exercise
Yes they both help with weightloss (if you actually need weight loss as they are ‘body balancing’ if you are underweight you will not lose weight with the correct methods)
Yes you can get stronger with both
Yes you will improve your balance
Yes you will increase your muscle density & muscle tone (yes we can make a certain area tighter. no we can not help you lose fat specifically in a certain area- like any non surgical method)
Yes you will get more flexible with both (if you actually need more flexibility….. just because you feel tight does not mean you are not flexible enough…chat to us if this confuses you!)
Fitness is defined by lots of different measures (think like how a property is valued more than just land size)- your fitness and wellbeing will improve- however things like your anaerobic capacity we will help you with outside of classes.
What is the right class for me?
The one that is easiest for you to get to that you enjoy.
Again- lets chat.
We want to make feeling great simpler for you. Not complex.
I'm injured, what should I do?
Lets chat. More often than not we have an option to support your rehab, we also work with the best treatment providers – this means we can send you to the best people to help if we are not the right fit right now.
We specialise in chronic issues, new injuries and well, just helping you to get going – so yes lets chat – see where you are at and make the best plan for you together. As we already work with most treatment providers we will work with your current treatment team if you have one, to help you feel better, sooner.
Broken people are our bag so to speak.
Now just isn't the right time....
Lets be fair- its hard to plant a tree in the middle of the storm.
It’s also a little bit about what is the best thing for you right now?
Doing something for you to help you feel better?
Again this is a wee bit about lets have a quick chat on the phone- we are humans too and are in the sandwich of children and older parents in rest homes! We understand the juggle and curveballs of life- its also what is the best thing for you – not just now but in the long run.
The reason we have such a celebrated name is because we go that extra mile- even when you haven’t officially ‘joined’ the Adapted family
How do I book my first session?
We highly recommend booking a No Sweat Intro as your first session- so we can make sure you provide you with what you need and make sure we are a good fit to work together.
The most efficient way to book your first class is to go through our GymMaster portal (the Book a Class button at the top of the page or click on the link below). Setting up this profile is quick and easy and will alow you to see all of our classes. Don’t worry, there is no commitment upon signing up and no payment information is needed. It is a completly free profile.
Once your profile is set up you can have a look at all of our classes, just hit the “Book a Class” button and have a look at everything we offer! It also entitles you to free access to our library and newsletters.
Do I have to make a booking to attend class?
While it is not necessary to book in ahead of time we want you to book in for a number of reasons:
1. So you make an appointment for your health
2. So we have space; yes, our classes do book out and we like everyone to have space
3. So we can prepare for you; we literally do.
Knowing a newbie is coming, what they want from a class and whether they have any issues is priceless for us!!
How early should I get to my first class?
Please arrive ten minutes early.
We will get you to fill in an initial screen so we can get to know you better and improve your experience if you have not already completed your complimentary No Sweat Intro.
There are a few extras that we put in place before your first class to help you feel welcome & at home- allowing some extra time makes this feel easier for you.
If you come earlier or late to class our doors may be locked; due to our venues it is safest for our class if we keep the entrances locked, but don’t worry we’ll spot you and show you were to go to let you in.
What are your prices?
Like our classes our pricing options are adapted to you. Within your Free No Sweat Intro we will work within your budget to cater to what you are needing.
What do I need to bring & what should I wear?
You don’t need to bring anything!
We provide ALL equipment free of charge including mats, but feel free to bring your own.
Please wear clothes that you are comfortable to exercise in and that are respectful to the teacher and the other members of the class. Keep in mind that you may come into positions that will possibly slide your shirt or shorts around. Most people do the class in bare feet or grippy socks.
Being a non cool kid studio – we generally wear a tee/singlet with another layer over the top if you get cold. Shorts, trackies or a pair of tights are fab. Essentially you do you.
Can I cancel a class after I have booked it?
Yes, you can cancel any booked classes up to 2 hours before the class is scheduled to start, just hit the trash can icon beside your class booking on your free app or booking portal. If you need to cancel closer to the class time please ring 03 972 5452.
How do I pay?

All accounts need to be settled by the completion of service. There is additional charges for direct debit & credit card payments. I'm injured, what should I do?
First of all contact us – we have a range of options for you from catering to your injury directly, placing your classes on hold or working with your physio or other treatment provider if they believe yoga and/or Pilates is a good option for your recovery.
Keep us up to date with how you are going. We love to know how you are feeling so we can cater the class to your needs.
I have a membership but am going on holiday, what should I do?
If you won’t be able to attend classes for a length of time we can put your account on hold for $10. Just contact us with the length of time you will be away (first and last date) and we will pause your account between your requested dates. You can even do this yourself on your online portal or app. Please be aware that some memberships have a restricted hold limit. Check your T & C’s or touch base with us – we love to help!
Class etiquette?
Yup, just like anything we have a few ‘ways of being’ to make the space and experience as comfortable as possible for everyone involved.
Here is what we work within:
– Cleanliness- we leave our shoes (unless you need them due to medical reasons) in the provided cubby holes. We sanitise all equipment and the space after each session.
– Respect- we do not walk on other peoples mats (yes our mats are all set out for the planned class & students)- some mats will be folded or have extra props around them due to the student(s) personal needs please do not take these spots unless you are aware they have been set up for you. We do not ‘bags’ mats or spaces as everyone is welcome & equal in our classes- if you would like to be together with a friend/family please ensure you arrive early to ensure this happens
– Props- these are already set up for the class – they may look funny to you like blocks/straps/blankets/balls etc please do not move mats and props as they have been specifically set up for the class about to occur- if you think you need a different set up not already adjusted by the teacher please talk to the teacher first.
-Communication- we cannot help if we do not know what is happening. If you have a new ‘challenge’ please let us know as soon as possible in advance (even email is fine to start@adapted.co.nz) so we can be prepared – we are working with multiple ‘challenges’ within a class so as much forewarning as we can get is really appreciated. During the class please let the teacher know if you are having difficulty (or finding things too easy!!) they will happily oblige and adjust to your needs during the session.
-Ego- We know this may sound a bit weird but please work within your limits not the person beside you! As we mix our classes and having multiple levels of capacity in our classes everyone will be working to different levels and shapes fit for them- the teacher will be offering different options individually & to the group- please do you!!!
-Tidiness- Our teachers are busy as well, please help them with tidying up your space as it was when you arrived so that the teacher is not packing up for everyone else- if in doubt- please ask!
Communication is your friend
If we do not know what is occuring for you- we cannot help.
We will adapt to you in so many ways (and really want to!).
So please get in touch, reach out, talk to us.
Just like you, we are normal people. Sadly not pyschic yet! & yup- in our process of progress not perfection we do make mistakes- let us know!
We will be in regular contact with you- please take the opportunities to feedback, chat, ask questions & raise concerns.
Adapting to you is our job.
